SOME apps suck up more mobile data than others, but do you know which one is the worst?
If you’re a regular user of TikTok, Netflix, and Google Hangouts, you might want to check your data caps.
Mobile store Buymobiles has revealed how much data popular apps use.
When it comes to social media, TikTok ranked the worst.
The researchers found that it used 840MB of data per hour.
It also took up more phone storage than Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, reaching 244.9MB.
But Instagram’s average daily usage was highest at 1.74 GB over 145 minutes.
Facebook actually used less data per hour than Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, draining 100MB of data per hour.
That’s one-eighth of TikTok’s data request.
When it came to entertainment, Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube were all about equal – using 3GB of data per hour of HD footage.
YouTube’s daily usage was much lower than its rivals at 550MB.
But BBC iPlayer was much more efficient, using just 225MB of data per hour.
Spotify came in below all of its rivals simply because streaming music is less demanding than video.
For work apps, Google Hangouts was more data-intensive than Skype, Zoom, and Gmail.
But Gmail took up the most storage space at 333.3MB.
And on navigation, Google Maps (36 MB) used more data than Waze (15 MB) and much more than Apple Maps (10 MB).
Google Maps also used more storage on the device than Waze and Apple Maps.
“It’s been very interesting to see how the most popular apps compare in terms of data usage,” said Buymobiles phone expert Jess Canning.
“These apps are part of our daily lives and by learning how much data they use, we hope our customers can choose a price plan that suits them perfectly.
“Avid TikTok users will need a lot of data to use the app to their liking, as well as with the majority of video streaming platforms like YouTube.”
