As a former bodybuilder/physical competitor and current Olympic/powerlifter, TrainHeroic is the best workout app I’ve come across for weightlifting. This is another freemium app where free users can create their own routines and track overall progress while subscribed users have access to things like readiness tracking (which tracks your fitness level). energy, sleep quality and general pain), exercise rankings and individual coaching.
If you prefer coaching, you can either choose a set program (which is a one-time purchase) that you can add to your built-in calendar at any time, or an ongoing program (with a corresponding monthly payment). Each exercise comes with a video tutorial or text description so you can safely follow your workout and perform moves you may not be familiar with. And if you don’t want to get super bulky, you can find programs more focused on toning and maintaining weight. You can even find specific programs, like Body by Daddy, to create a more masculine or feminine figure if you are trans male/female, or non-binary.
TrainHeroic automatically calculates your maximum rep and work percentages based on your inputs, eliminating the frustration of trying to do calculations on the fly. If you choose a coaching program, you’ll also have access to that program’s community so you can compare techniques, ask questions, and get exposure. Subscription pricing varies by program, but most ongoing coaching sessions cost around $30/month, while one-time programs are often even cheaper. The app also has a timer feature so you can track the duration of your workouts and make sure you’re resting properly between heavy sets.
Advantages:
- Automatic work and maximum calculations of one repetition
- Video and text tutorials
- Robust community
- Integrated timer
The inconvenients:
- The free version is somewhat limited
- No meal/nutrition tracking
