Since the COVID-19 pandemic caused some growth in the tablet segment, Google has started to focus on tablets again. With Android 12L, it introduced UI improvements to take advantage of larger tablet screens. With Android 13, it introduces various apps with an optimized design for tablets.

At the Google I/O 2022 event last night, the company revealed 20 new apps optimized for tablets with new designs. These apps include Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Family Link, Google Maps, Google Meet, Google Messages, Google Photos, Google Play, Google Translate, Google TV, YouTube, YouTube Music, etc. These apps use a multi-column layout to take full advantage of a tablet’s larger screen.

Google said it encouraged third-party app developers to create tablet versions of their apps. Canva, Facebook, TikTok, and Zoom have already started building tablet-optimized apps. To help users discover these upcoming tablet apps, Google is making changes to the Google Play Store. Users can select filters to find applications optimized for tablets.

Samsung has already optimized its stock apps for tablets, and with several more tablet-optimized apps coming later this year, using tablets will become a much more immersive experience. And Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab S8 and Pixel tablet can compete with Apple’s iPad lineup.
