MediaTek captures 46% share in Android tablet app chips

New Delhi: MediaTek, driven by increased traction with major Android tablet OEMs, captured 46% of the Android tablet application (AP) processor market during the third quarter of 2021, according to a new report.

According to Strategy Analytics, the global tablet hotspot market decreased by 14% in unit terms, but grew by 8% in terms of revenue in the third quarter of 2021.

Apple, Intel, MediaTek, Qualcomm and Samsung LSI captured the top five rankings of tablet hotspot revenue shares in Q3 2021.

“After the recovery in 2020 and early 2021, AP tablet shipments declined year-over-year for the second consecutive quarter in the third quarter of 2021. However, shipments fared better and increased by 11 % compared to pre-pandemic period (Q3 2019),” said Sravan Kundojjala, director of Handset Component Technologies at Strategy Analytics in a statement.

Apple maintained its leadership in the tablet hotspot market with a 60% revenue share, followed by Intel with 13% and MediaTek with 10%.

In-cell (3G/4G/5G) hotspots accounted for one-third of tablet hotspot shipments. Tablet AP ASPs were up 25% year-over-year, due to an increased mix of premium APs and supply constraints.

“With the exception of MediaTek, all other tablet hotspot vendors saw their hotspot shipments decline year-over-year in Q3 2021,” Kundojjala added.
