Indian app monthly active users, games jump 200% on Google Play in 2021


Indian apps and games are attracting extraordinary interest from investors and their monthly active user base grew 200% on Google Play in 2021 compared to 2019, a senior Google official said on Wednesday.

While announcing the Appscale Academy Class of 2022, Google Play Vice President of Partnerships Purnima Kochikar said apps and games made by Indian companies are also finding global audiences.



“Last year, Indian apps and games saw a 200% increase in monthly active users on Google Play compared to 2019,” Kochikar said.

She added that Ludo King has become one of the most played games in the world.

“In 2021, time spent by users outside India on apps and games made by Indian companies increased by 150% compared to 2019,” Kochikar said.

She also said that innovations are emerging from different parts of India including Tier II and Tier III cities. “The opportunity to innovate is no longer limited to certain pockets of the country.”

Google launched Appscale Academy in collaboration with the Meity Startup Hub.

It selected 100 start-ups from more than 400 entries based on their creative ideas and innovation, product quality, product scalability, and diversity of talent.

The Appscale Academy program will offer a six-month training program to start-ups through a personalized curriculum. It was designed to help companies build high-quality apps for a global market, including sessions on UX design, business model and monetization strategies, international expansion best practices, and security practices. and data security.

Startups will have access to instructor-led virtual webinars, self-study materials, and mentorship sessions with leading local and global professionals. Select start-ups will also have the opportunity to present their pitch to leading venture capitalists.

“Startups and developers are key drivers of India’s digital transformation journey. At MeitY, we value our partnership with Google, and I am extremely excited to further strengthen this spirit of innovation with the Appscale Academy program,” said Co-Secretary (Electronics and IT) Bhuvnesh Kumar.

The main sectors of the cohort cover education, healthcare, finance, social, e-commerce and gaming.

It also includes start-ups supporting major communities in India through creative apps in agriculture, business-to-business, parenting and more.

Thirty-five percent of the cohort come from Tier II and III cities, including Surat, Vadodara, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut and Morbi, and 58 percent of the cohort have a woman in a leadership role, Google said in A declaration.
