Google Chrome for macOS offers a relatively simpler and more efficient way to place a website shortcut in your Mac’s Dock. The following method should work on all versions of macOS as long as you are running the latest version of Chrome. The advantage of using Chrome is that you don’t need to explicitly set an icon for your shortcut unless you want to use a custom icon. Unlike Safari, you can add website shortcuts to the Applications section of your Dock since Chrome creates PWAs. To create a shortcut, first make sure Chrome is running in normal mode, also known as non-incognito mode. Then,

  • Visit the website or certain web pages in the Chrome browser.
  • Tap the 3 vertical dots at the top right to open the menu.
  • Click on “More tools” and select “Create shortcut”.

Give the shortcut a custom name, if desired. Check the “Open as window” option if you still prefer to open the shortcut in a separate window.

  • Click on the “Create” button.
  • Chrome will create a Progressive Web App (PWA) for the chosen website. A new directory called “Chrome Apps” is also added to the Finder. Go to /Users/your username/Apps/Chrome Apps to see it.
