If you’re new to Chrome OS, you’ll quickly find that the device comes with a collection of pre-installed apps. These apps were created by Google to be used as default apps for various tasks. While this is handy for a novice user, if you’re someone who likes to switch things up and customize your Chromebook, you’ll want to start tweaking the default apps.
Changing the default apps on a Chromebook is easy, and in this article I’ll show you how.

Setting default apps on a Chromebook
- Open the Files app and navigate to the file whose default app you want to change.
- Click on the file to select it.
- At the top right of the navigation bar, you will see an option that says “Open.”
- Click the drop-down button next to the word Open. You will see a list of applications that can open this file.
- Click on the option under the apps list called Change the default.
- Choose the app you want to set as default and click on it so that a blue tick appears next.
Alternately;
- Click on the file in question to select it.
- Right click and select Open with.
- Scroll to Change the default Option and change the default application.

Open a file using a non-default application
Follow these steps if you want to open a file with another app but don’t want to change the default app.
- Open the Files app and select the file in question.
- At the top right of the navigation bar, click the drop-down button next to the word Open.
- You will see a list of applications that can open this file.
- Select the application with which you want to open the file.
Alternately;
- Click on the file in question to select it.
- Right click and select Open with.
- Scroll through the apps that can open the file and select the app of your choice.
