Google announces Android apps in curious Amazon storefront

Lately, especially with Samsung, Google has been pushing the Android ecosystem and what it can do. The latest example is an Amazon store/brand page (in the US) called “Devices with Google”.

This differs from the Made by Google storefront (Pixel, Nest, Chromecast, etc.) in that it only highlights Android phones from different partners. A cover shows Google Duo with its foldable enhancements, YouTube and Google Maps Live View.

Work, play and connect right out of the box.

Curiously, the word “Android” is never mentioned on this Amazon store page, the focus being on Google apps and services that run on the mobile operating system. The Android brand also does not appear in the “Google | Samsung” section, but the ads were promoted on Android’s social networks.

There are three tent poles with Google noting the “built-in” nature. For search, there’s a quick search via the homepage bar with voice queries, including “Google AR” not “Google Lens”, and Assistant.

“Built-in Google Apps” covers Chrome and Google Password Manager, Google Pay and Gmail as part of Workspace. Finally, Google Security relates to Play Protect, Kids Space (and possibly Family Link) and Google Account settings

Moving from the Home tab of the Amazon storefront, Devices with Google highlights four OEMs and offers a rather interesting description for each:

OnePlus: the best of Google security combined with ultra-fast processing power.

Matching security to performance is a bit generic, while “processing power” is pretty much the same across the board with flagships at this point.

  • Highlighted Phones: OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, 10 Pro, Nord N20, N200.

Samsung: The best of Google customization meets striking design.

  • Highlighted Phones: S21 FE, S22, S22+, S22 Ultra, Flip 3, Fold 3, A12, A13, A53

Motorola: The best of Google simplicity meets uninterrupted performance.

Alluding to the nature mostly stored on Moto devices.

  • Highlighted Phones: Razr 5G, Moto G Stylus 5G, G Pure, G Power, G Play, One 5G Ace, Edge, Edge +

Pixel: Google’s useful Pixel phones.

“Useful” is definitely the brand Made by Google uses to describe itself.

9to5Google’s review

We first came across Google’s store page as a “sponsored” banner above a product listing after searching Amazon. “Shop Google Mobile Services” was the first item in the carousel.

Google feeling the need to advertise in this way is rather interesting. He wants to introduce himself to people who buy Android phones and make sure they choose those with Play Services. It’s not the biggest problem in the US, but conditions could always change in the future and overseas.

In the meantime, the absence of the “Android” name anywhere is highly unlikely to reflect Google’s loss of commitment to the underlying development of the mobile operating system, but it could represent a change in brand that focuses on proprietary services that Google explicitly provides. .
