Earlier this month, Samsung was accused of strangling android performance of applications on its smartphones. Controversy led to permanent delisting from Geekbench Samsung Galaxy S22 series from its benchmarking results.
The platform has now been removed Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 of its ranking, following a report by Android Police. He said the South Korean company also limits app performance on the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. He reported that the single-core scores of the disguised Geekbench app were up to 24% lower than those of the standard Geekbench app. Likewise, multi-core scores dropped by 11%. Last year’s Tab S7 series and the Tab S5e didn’t see a significant drop in benchmark scores, which means the GOS-related throttling wasn’t happening at the time.
The announcement was made by the official Geekbench handle via a Twitter post. “Thanks to @AndroidPolice, we have become aware that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 makes performance decisions based on app identifiers rather than app behavior. We have removed the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 from our chart Android benchmark,” the tweet read.

Game Optimizing Service (GOS) is a pre-installed system application on Samsung smartphones. This app is said to intentionally throttle the performance of other apps to prevent excessive heating of the device during gaming and related activities.
According to Twitter user @GaryeonHan, Samsung has intentionally throttled the performance of over 10,000 apps in its smartphones. These include popular apps like YouTube, Google Maps, Play Store, Chrome, Gmail, Google Play Services as well as third-party apps like Netflix, Disney+, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, among others.
Samsung then said it would release a software update to provide a performance priority option in the Game Booster Lab within the Game Launcher app as soon as possible. It has started releasing an update to the Galaxy S22 series phones and is now expected to bring a similar update to the Galaxy Tab S8 series.
