Applying for your dream job? You’ll want to put your best foot forward. Things like researching the company effectively, getting all your documents in the best possible condition, practicing before your interview, etc., will help you make the best impression.
The good news is that there are a few apps that will help you with the process. Here are the top five we recommend:
The application process typically begins with creating a resume or writing a cover letter, or both. For many people, creating these documents can be a daunting task. Even if you’re only talking about yourself and your qualifications, you might find it hard to know where to start.
Google Docs is a great tool to leverage in this situation, as it provides a library of resume and cover letter templates, as well as other useful documents.
To get started, open Google Docs in a browser or from the app, then click Template Gallery. You will find many useful templates for resumes and cover letters. Simply enter your details and upload your new CV or cover letter.
Unlike most of the other apps we will talk about in this article, Google Docs is completely free, so you should take advantage of it. In addition to using the free templates, two other ways to do this are to enable offline access and download the Google Docs and Google Drive apps to your mobile device, so you can edit your documents on the go.
Few things can ruin an otherwise perfect app quite like a noticeable typo or misspelled word. Although we all make mistakes, small grammatical errors can show recruiters that you aren’t paying attention to detail.
You don’t have to go through your work manually to find the smallest errors. Just use a grammar checker like Grammarly to highlight any errors in your work. And not only will Grammarly catch your grammatical errors, but it will also offer some suggestions to improve the flow of your writing.
There are three ways to use Grammarly. You can use it in the browser by downloading or pasting your Word documents from Grammarly.com; by activating the Grammarly Chrome extension; or using it as a desktop application.
The Grammarly Chrome extension is our recommended method, especially if you use Google Docs, as we recommended, as it allows you to use Grammarly while you work on your Google Docs templates.
The free version of Grammarly is a great tool for detecting grammatical errors and improving the fluency of your writing. The premium version offers even more powerful analyzes of your writing, with deeper insights on how to improve its flow and the tone of your writing.
LinkedIn can be a treasure trove for job candidates in several ways, as most companies put a lot of information on their LinkedIn pages. This includes things like their recent business and developments, mission, major changes to their corporate structure, personnel, and more. All of these things are things you will need to know when interviewing the company.
Additionally, you may want to know who is in charge of recruiting for the position you are interested in. This will allow you to effectively tailor your cover letter, including their name and position.
To effectively search for a company on LinkedIn, first follow the company and visit their page. You don’t have to follow a business to visit their page, but connecting with them can improve your exposure to them.
Once on the company page, you’ll see a navigation menu, usually with “Home”, “About”, “Messages”, “Jobs”, “People”, and “Videos” tabs. Some pages may have a few extra tabs. You can find out more about the company by clicking on the On tab, and what they did while reading their posts.
Equally important, you may be able to find out who to address your cover letter to by clicking on People. Some companies may have a lot of employees, so you can drill down further by entering keywords like HR or recruiting, for example, to find people who might be involved in recruiting.
You can use Glassdoor to search for a company in a slightly different way than you would use LinkedIn to search. Want to get an idea of the work culture in a company before applying or accepting an offer? Glassdoor is a great tool for this.
You can learn about things like compensation, working conditions, what employees have to say about management, and more. Employees may post this data anonymously, so you can generally rely on it to be truthful, especially when many employees are saying the same things.
You can also use Glassdoor to practice for interviews. Simply search for the company you are interviewing with, then click Interviews. There, you can read about other people’s interview experiences with the company, which will help you prepare for yours.
Do you have a technical interview soon? You’ll want to have plenty of practice under your belt. Technical interviews, of course, can frequently include technical questions. And even if you have the knowledge, you will also need to understand how to present it effectively.
There are plenty of websites that help answer generic interview questions, but far fewer that focus on technical interview questions. Pramp is one of them and is dedicated to providing interview resources and helping people with coding careers.
To get the most out of using Pramp, you can practice coding interview questions for free or sign up for more dedicated help on a premium plan. If your goal is just to practice tech-related interview questions, the free plan is fine.
